Why ETH?

“I am thrilled to be joining ETH and D-MTEC next year,” Professor Barrage says. “For an economist specialising in energy and climate change, ETH offers an unparalleled opportunity to build a world-class research group.” As motivating factors, she cites not only ETH’s global leadership in energy technologies and climate science but also Switzerland’s role in the global financial system and the possibility this brings for private-sector engagement, noting that “there is enormous potential for financial innovations to foster the global energy transition and the management of climatic risks.”

Returning home

Professor Barrage also has personal reasons for satisfaction with her new appointment. “As a Swiss woman from Zurich,” she says, “I am especially humbled by the opportunity to join ETH and to contribute to Swiss society.”

Research interests and synergies

Lint Barrage is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research investigates how environmental processes and policies affect macroeconomic outcomes and human welfare. She has a particular interest in the effects of energy and climate policy on economic development.

Professor Barrage’s appointment will boost D-MTEC’s competencies and research activities in energy economics and policy, and will also create important synergies with colleagues at the Center for Energy Policy and Economics and the Energy Science Center.

Professor Barrage will join D-MTEC in summer 2022.
