Research Plan
The information provided on this page only applies to doctoral students who enrolled before 1 January 2022. If you have been provisionally admitted in 2022 or later, you have to compile a "doctoral plan" instead of a "research plan".
As a doctoral student, you will be required to compile a research plan outlining the nature and goals of your doctoral thesis and your responsibilities. You will submit this plan to your supervisor and, if possible, to a co-examiner. It must also be approved by the D-MTEC Doctoral Committee. It must be submitted within 12 months of enrolment. Extensions to this deadline must be approved by the Doctoral Committee.
There is no set format for the research plan, but it must contain the following elements:
- Research tasks
- Content-based framework and time-frame
- Scope of research work
- Other obligations
If your doctoral thesis project is mainly carried out outside of ETH Zurich, this must be specified in your research plan, and the reasons given.
You must submit your research plan, together with the Approval of your research plan form, to the D-MTEC Doctoral Administration, which will arrange for it to be signed and approved by the Doctoral Committee and will forward the form to the ETH Doctoral Administration. At this point the Vice-Rector will provide final confirmation of your admission to the doctoral programme.
