Doctoral examination
Your doctorate concludes with your doctoral examination, during which you will defend your doctoral thesis. There are several steps to take before and after your examination.
After passing the doctoral examination, you will be awarded the title "Doctor of Sciences (Dr. Sc.) ETH Zurich".
As a doctoral candidate, you are responsible for the organisation of your doctoral examination. Please make sure that you have taken all necessary steps before your doctoral examination, in particular the nomination of co-examiners.
The oral examination is conducted by the examination committe and lasts for at least one hour. It can be held online, face to face, or as a hybrid arrangement. The doctoral plan specifies whether you will give a short presentation of the doctoral thesis and your most important research results immediately preceding the examination. If this is the case, it does not shorten the duration of the oral examination.
The doctoral examination and the presentation are open to members of the MTEC department. In consultation with the doctoral thesis supervisor, other guests can be invited.
If at least one member of the examination committee participates online, MMS (ETH Multimedia Services) must be involved to check the technical conditions.
If you plan your doctoral examination online or hybrid please:
- read the information sheet “Download Implementing doctoral exams (PDF, 91 KB)”
- complete the external page MMS online form
Usually, MMS will send you a Zoom invitation link which you will need to forward to the examination committee.
The D-MTEC Doctoral Administration is not involved in the technical organisation of an online doctoral examination. The Zoom invitation needs to be sent via MMS or the doctoral candidate to the examination committee.
