Doctoral research

The central element of your doctorate is the research project and the thesis you will write about it under the supervision of a professor.

The doctorate introduces doctoral candidates to current research and represents one of the most essential parts of academic work at ETH Zurich. The doctoral degree provides recognition of the ability to conduct high-quality academic research and is awarded on the basis of an independent original thesis and an oral examination.

At D-MTEC, you will write a monograph or a cumulative doctoral thesis consisting of at least three manuscripts that have already been published or are soon to be published in peer-reviewed journals or books. A cumulative doctoral thesis must begin with an introductory chapter. In this chapter, the connections between the single works and their positioning within the area of study must be made clear. For co-authored manuscripts, the nature and extent of the contribution of the doctoral candidate must be described in the introductory chapter.
