MTEC Day 2023
On 2 December 2023, the MTEC Department honoured its graduates who successfully completed the MSc ETH MTEC and MAS ETH MTEC studies and the D-MTEC doctorate.
A total of 400 graduates, alumni, faculty members and guests participated in the joint celebrations, which took place at Campus Hönggerberg for MSc/doctoral and MAS graduates. A reception with talar shooting, where graduates could dress in the traditional academic gown, was held afterwards in the main halls of HPH building.
Vice Rector for Continuing Education and D-MTEC Professor Stefano Brusoni congratulated the graduates on their achievements and led through the entire Awards and Graduation Ceremony. Angela Qu, Chief Supply Chain Officer at Iveco Group and D-MTEC alumna delivered an emotional commencement speech, which inspired the graduates as they turn to their future career paths.
MSc MTEC graduate Baptiste Henry shared his MTEC experiences in a very touching Graduate Speech. The representatives of the MAS graduates, Dr Kaitlin Howell and Tobias Mohrhauer, inspired the audience with their witty contribution about «A Tale of two Chats».
The graduation ceremony was rounded off by the exceptional performance of the ETH Big Band.
Awards and Prizes
MTEC Day is also an occasion to honour outstanding academic work, including Master’s and doctoral theses.
The Willi Studer Prize and the ETH MAS Excellence Award are awarded to the students with the best overall academic performance, based on their Grade Point Average (GPA). This year’s recipients were:
- MSc graduate Kaiwen Guo (Willi Studer Prize), whose Master’s thesis, “Incentives and obstacles influencing the adoption of software-as-a-service enterprise applications”, was supervised by Professor Stephan Wagner, Chair of Logistics Management
- MAS graduate Dr Roland Prohaska (MAS Excellence Award), whose Master's thesis, “Performance management at D-MATH and its impact on job satisfaction and organizational commitment”, was supervised by Professor Gudela Grote, Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology
- MAS graduate Markus Thurnherr (MAS Excellence Award), whose Master’s thesis, “Efficiency and impact of double-checks in a high-reliability-organization”, was supervised by Professor Gudela Grote, Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology
ETH Medals are awarded to the authors of the best Master’s theses and outstanding doctoral theses. This year’s recipients were:
- Dr Florian Böser for his doctoral thesis, “Essays on private money creation and monetary policy”, supervised by Professor Hans Gersbach, Chair of Macroeconomics: Innovation and Policy
- Dr Daniel Ehmann for his doctoral thesis, “Essays on economic forecasting with machine learning”, supervised by Professor Jan-Egbert Sturm, Chair of Applied Macroeconomics
- Dr Julian Senoner for his doctoral thesis, “Artificial intelligence in manufacturing: Augmenting humans at work”, supervised by Professor Torbjørn Netland, Chair of Production and Operations Management
- MSc graduate Lars Matthiesen for his Master’s thesis, “Customer behavior prediction with neural networks”, supervised by Professor Florian von Wangenheim, Chair of Chair of Technology Marketing
- MSc graduates and runners-up for the ETH medal Johann Johannsson, Attila Nás and Nicola Vacchelli were also recognised
Welcome to ETH Alumni
Towards the end of both ceremonies, Dr Isabel Spicker, D-MTEC Coordinator of Short Courses, Alumni Relations & Mentoring, officially bid farewell to the graduates and invited them to stay in touch with the department. Joël L. Brunner, President ETH Alumni Engineering & Management EAEM and Siddhartha Arora, President of MAS MTEC Alumni, welcomed all the graduates as ETH Alumni.

After the official graduation ceremony, all guests were invited to the reception in the main halls where the traditional talar shooting took place. The department encouraged all graduates to stay in touch, and to explore the various offerings of the D-MTEC and ETH alumni organisations.
