Exchange
We encourage MSc MTEC students to study abroad and welcome exchange students through several exchange programmes.
D-MTEC is part of a variety of exchange programmes with universities in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. Detailed information on programmes, scholarships and application procedures is available at the ETH Student Exchange Office.
Learn more about ETH international relations and the experience of exchange students within the ETH International Knowledge Base (accessible for registered ETH students and faculty).
As an MSc MTEC student you have several international exchange opportunities. Attend the Student Exchange Office Infomarkt to learn more about exchange programmes in Switzerland and abroad. We also encourage you to consider self-organised stays or IARU Global Summer Programmes for international experiences.
If you hold a Bachelor's degree from ETH Zurich:
If you hold a Bachelor's degree from ETH Zurich with a GPA of at least 4.5, you are eligible to participate in our regular student exchange programmes. D-MTEC recommends planning your exchange semester during the second or third semester of your Master's programme. Start planning early to meet all deadlines and prepare thoroughly for your exchange. If opportunities are limited, D-MTEC will make a pre-selection among candidates. Nomination by the student exchange office and approval by the host university are required.
If a course is meant to count as a Core Course, you have to submit a written “confirmation of equivalence” from the relevant D-MTEC professor via email to the D-MTEC Mobility Advisor. Elective Courses can be approved by the Mobility Advisor. If a course is meant to count as a Supplementary Course, it must be listed in the Learning Agreement. A maximum of 30 CP acquired at another university can be applied toward the ETH diploma. The translation of grades and credits into ETH’s grading and credit system is the responsibility of D-MTEC.
You may also want to consider the option of participating in a research project or writing your Master's thesis at a foreign university. Plan and organise these projects in consultation with your tutor.
If you do not hold a Bachelor's degree from ETH Zurich:
As a Master's student with a Bachelor's degree from another university, there are several avenues for you to explore international study experiences. You can plan your own study abroad experience through a self-organised stay, conduct your Master's thesis research at a foreign institution, or participate in summer programmes offered by the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).
Are you considering an exchange semester at D-MTEC? Here is what you need to know to make it happen.
To be eligible for an exchange semester at D-MTEC, you must have completed your Bachelor's degree in engineering sciences or natural sciences with a focus on technology, and have a strong academic record.
You can tailor your semester according to your interests and choose lectures from the extensive ETH Course Catalogue. You need to earn a minimum of 20 Credit Points (CP) per semester, with at least 14 CP from D-MTEC (courses starting with 363 in the Course Catalogue). Your learning agreement must be approved by both your home university and D-MTEC.
You can also participate in a research project and write your Master's thesis during your exchange. In that case you will need a letter of acceptance from a professor at D-MTEC. You can find detailed information about professorships, research areas, and contact addresses on our website, or in the D-MTEC Chair Guide.
During your exchange, plan to take your examinations during the official ETH examination periods. Once your grades are finalised, you can request a transcript of records from the D-MTEC Student Services.
