Programme Elements

The MSc MTEC programme consists of courses, voluntary special initiatives and programmes, and modules in which you apply your knowledge (internship and Master's thesis).

Overview

The Core Courses are supplemented by a wide range of Elective Courses which are freely selectable in the D-MTEC Course Catalogue. This allows you to specialise in the field of interest. Elective Courses comprise at least 10 CP.

You can deepen the knowledge you acquired in the area(s) of engineering and/or natural sciences during your Bachelor’s studies in Supplementary Courses from other ETH departments.

Supplementary Courses must comprise at least 12 CP. You must document your Supplementary Courses in your Learning Agreement. The Learning Agreement needs to be submitted via myStudies and accepted by Student Services before you enrol in the semester in which you will take the Supplementary Courses.

Please note, courses from D-MTEC or courses by other ETH departments with a focus on Management and Economics do not qualify as supplementary courses.

Individually combined core and elective courses guarantee in-depth knowledge in a chosen field of specialisation. Together with the tutor, students choose an adequate combination of courses in their major. The Master’s thesis is often written in the student’s field of specialisation.

The industrial internship is an excellent opportunity to touch base with the job market and gain exposure to specific professional environments. The internship is mandatory and lasts at least 10 weeks.

The Master's thesis lasts six months and is written on a full-time basis. It is supervised by the tutor and normally deals with a subject chosen from the six skill areas. The thesis is often carried out in collaboration with a company. In exceptional cases a professor from
another department or university may co-supervise the Master's thesis.
